Part One of the Women in Business Speaker Series will feature a panel of women who are involved in the Entrepreneurial Community in the greater San Diego region. These women entrepreneurs will focus their talk on their initial journey in becoming groundbreakers in the startup community.

This event is open to UC San Diego students, alumni, faculty & staff, and members of our UC San Diego community. RSVPs are required.

MODERATOR

SILVIA MAH, FOUNDING PARTNER OF HERA FUND AND FOUNDER & CEO OF HERA LABS

Dr. Silvia Mah is a premier advocate for empowering women-owned businesses on a global level by promoting, nurturing, and investing in socially relevant new ventures that allow women to excel around the world.

Through her work, Dr. Mah has identified challenges unique to female entrepreneurs. To address these challenges, she has created a unique combination of supportive endeavors.

Dr. Mah serves as CEO of Hera-Labs, an accelerator program for women-owned businesses, founding partner of Hera Fund, an angel investment group and developing early-stage fund, and supporter/angel investor of Hera Hub, a supportive women-focused co-working franchise.

Her larger vision is to educate and develop female angel investors. Through financial Dr. Mah’s mission is to create more examples of successful women entrepreneurs for future generations, and educate and develop new angel investors. She believes that women can be the catalyst of this global shift through financial investment in one another, critical also in sustaining economic growth for future generations.

PANELISTS

DR. SARAH M. (ESPER) GUTHALS, CO-FOUNDER AND CTO OF THOUGHTSTEM

Sarah has her PhD from UCSD in Computer Science with an emphasis on Education. She co-Founded ThoughtSTEM, a San Diego based company that develops courses, trainings, software, and textbooks for children 8-18 to learn how to program. Specifically, she is interested in getting children into programming by giving them control over their favorite video games, such as Minecraft.

RENEE ZAU, CO-FOUNDER AND CEO OF DONATIONMATCH.COM

Renee graduated from UCSD with a B.S. in Bioengineering, then left biotech after a few years to start three Curves franchises. She mentored more than 100 franchise openings over 3 years, then brought the FasTrackids preschool program to San Diego. While volunteering on silent auction committees, she observed frequent frustrations around the process of donating products and gift certificates for marketing and fundraising. After several years conceptualizing the idea, her husband joined her to create DonationMatch.com, the first self-service platform that streamlines the in-kind donation and sponsorship process for donor companies and recipient nonprofit events alike.
