Undergraduate Student Essay Contest Award in honor of César E. Chávez – Due March 6th!

UC San Diego, César E. Chávez Undergraduate Student Essay Contest Award

The César E. Chávez Planning Committee at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) has established a UCSD Undergraduate Student Essay Contest Award in honor of César E. Chávez.  The award will recognize students who have demonstrated commitment to the advancement of César’s core values at UCSD and abroad.  Winners will receive the monetary prizes and recognition in UCSD media publications. Prize Recipients will also receive a special invitation to attend the César E. Chávez Celebration Kickoff Luncheon on Wednesday, April, 1st in the Price Center Ballroom.

All submitted essays will become the property of the University. A panel of UCSD volunteer judges will select the winners. Essay Contest recipients will be notified by March 13th. Please direct all questions to chanintern@ucsd.edu.

Essay Contest Prompt

Cesar Chavez was a prolific community organizer and a champion of social change. He used ten core values to guide his life. Using one or more of these core values with which you most identify, please discuss how you have contributed to equity and social justice at UC San Diego.    How will you apply Cesar’s core values to create positive change in the Latina/o community and the greater society?

Deadline to Apply:

  • Applications must be submitted by Friday, March 6, 2015, 11:59pm.
  • Essays can be emailed to chanintern@ucsd.edu.

Essay Contest Guidelines:

  • Submit a one-two page essay in a word document answering the Essay prompt.
  • Essay submissions should be in a format of your choice (APA, MPA, etc.).
  • In the header of your essay, please include your name (First, Last), PID (A99999999), and UCSD email.
  • Essays can be emailed to chanintern@ucsd.edu.
  • Please write “Cesar Chavez Essay Contest” in the email subject line

Essay Contest Award Prizes

  • One-Grand Prize Winner:
    • $600 Award to one winner
    • Name and Essay will be printed in the UCSD Celebration luncheon program.
    • Special invite to the Wednesday, April 1st, UCSD Celebration luncheon in the Price Center Ballroom.

 

  • Two-Second Prize Winners:
    • $500 Award to each winner (2)
    • Special invite to the Wednesday, April 1st, UCSD Celebration luncheon in the Price Center Ballroom.
    • Name will be featured in the Celebration luncheon program.

 

  • Two-Third Prize Winner:
    • $200 Award to each winner (2)
    • Special invite to the Wednesday, April 1st, UCSD Celebration luncheon in the Price Center Ballroom.
    • Name will be featured in the Celebration luncheon program.
