Entering Entertainment: Panel & Networking Event Tuesday, November 18, 2014

Join UCSD Alumni, Career Services Center, Department of Communication, Triton TV, and Undergraduate Communication Society to learn how to forge a career in entertainment. Hear a panel of experts discuss entertainment career paths, experiences that will help build your resume, and ways to navigate this competitive field, then get a chance to network in small groups with professionals and recruiters to get answers to your specific questions. Career participants will represent various areas of entertainment, from film and television production and agency work to digital media, public relations, and sports.

Confirmed Entertainment Panel:

Steven B. Cohen, Marshall ’78, Communication-Visual Arts Steven has more than 30 years of experience in developing technology solutions for entertainment, including solutions for sound and picture editorial, calibrated on-set dailies review, remote collaboration, digital cinema distribution and media storage. He has provided technology solutions to many leading filmmakers, including James L. Brooks, Richard Donner, Michael Bay, Tony Scott, David Fincher, Gore Verbinski and Bret Ratner. One of his most cherished contributions to the Motion Picture Industry is as Executive Producer of The Cutting Edge: The Magic of Movie Editing, a documentary that highlights the art and history of Cinema Editors.

Rachel Axler, M.F.A. ‘04, Playwriting

Rachel is a television writer/producer and playwright, whose recent credits include How I Met Your Mother, New Girl, Bored to Death, and Parks & Recreation. She got her start in 2005 writing for The Daily Show, an ambition she had harbored since working on her M.F.A. at UCSD. In 2006 and 2009, she won Prime time Emmy Awards for her work as a part of The Daily Show’s writing team. Since then, Axler’s returned to the west coast, where she now writes television scripts in Los Angeles, fitting in her own playwriting projects on the side.

Chris Biele, Sixth ’07, Communication

Chris is a proud graduate of UCSD’s Sixth College. While balancing a full course load, he worked part-time at CBS8 in San Diego as a writer and production assistant. He moved to Palm Springs shortly after graduation to start a career as a television news reporter. It was there he earned an Emmy Award for his coverage of an inmate escape in a Coachella Valley neighborhood. From Palm Springs, he worked in Sacramento at the FOX affiliate, garnering an Edward R. Murrow Award, and then back in San Diego as a reporter at FOX5. He now works at MJE Marketing in San Diego and finds himself back in class, taking marketing and public relations courses at UCSD Extension. He continues to freelance as a reporter at FOX5.
