The deadliest disaster in the history of the garment industry did not happen 100 years ago, but in fact it happened three weeks ago. The factory collapse in Savar, Bangladesh on April 24, 2013 brought much of the world’s attention to the failure of a multibillion dollar global industry and the governments under which it operates to protect the basic well-being of the workers that manufacture its products. Although Bangladesh is the world’s second largest exporter of garments, exploitation in the industry is not only confined to places that are far from home.

Join the Student Sustainability Collective for a critical panel discussion featuring Joann Lo, Debby Cho and Guadalupe Hernandez, three noted garment and food service worker organizers, on the realities of these industries in the United States, and possibilities for organizing for change. We will also view a short documentary segment that follows the struggle of three Latina garment workers in their fight to gain basic labor and human rights in southern California’s garment industry.

Joann Lo is the Executive Director of the Food Chain Workers Alliance. She is the former lead organizer of the Garment Worker Center and current member of the City of LA’s Sweatfree Advisory Group.

Guadalupe (Lupe) Hernandez has been a garment worker for 20 years in LA. She is a former organizer with the Garment Worker Center.

Debby Cho is currently the education program associate with the Food Chain Workers Alliance. She was a student leader of Cornell Students Against Sweatshops and Cornell Organization for Labor Action and graduated last year. While at Cornell, Debby helped to get their bookstore to sell clothes made by the union factory Alta Gracia and to get the university to cut its contract with Nike.
